Apparently it is a fairly common problem for the water dispenser line in the GE side by side refrigerators to freeze. If you need to check if your line is frozen, simply remove the kick plate off the bottom of the fridge then unhook the water line just under the left door. Simply pull the two blue tabs apart to unhook the line. Place a cup under the line going towards the back of the refrigerator then activate the water dispenser. If water flows then the water line is frozen inside the door. Hook up the water line again and replace the kick plate. To thaw your line, use a hair dryer on high heat pointed the water line and back outside of the water dispenser control panel for about 1. Fortunately you can purchase a water line heater from amazon that installs in about 1. Ice makers need water supplied to the ice mold in order to make ice.

The sink and refrigerator would have to be on the same side of the room, and ours are not. But that still left me with the problem of our non-working ice and water dispenser. I wanted a solution that would preferably not involve tearing up our kitchen floor to run a pipe underneath, or any other similarly-major DIY construction effort. So I decided not to connect the refrigerator water line to the sink across the kitchen, but instead to go down through the kitchen floor and connect to the main water pipe in the basement.

Why do you want the ice maker in before of the softener? It does not add salt to the water. The salt is only used for regeneration. Peace Dave Dave is correct. We have had a softener at home for 25 yrs plumbed to soften the home’s total water supply. We drink, cook, make ice using the softened water. If we didn’t the water has a metallic taste and leaves rings on fixtures. IMO if feel you need soft water for other uses you ought to soften all the water rather than make ice with the untreated source water.
The salt is a “cleaner” for the softener media during regeneration.

As needed just use a bucket or pitcher to fill up the water tank ontop. I mainly want this for the ice so dont see filling it all of the time. The ice maker kit will also contain a metal feral if the line is plastic so you can connect the line to an angle stop if need be.
