In the past, some mental health professionals resorted to extreme measures such as institutionalization, castration, and electroconvulsive shock therapy to try to stop people from being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender LGBT. While these contemporary versions of conversion therapy are less shocking and extreme than some of those more frequently used in the past, they are equally devoid of scientific validity and pose serious dangers to patients—especially to minors, who are often forced to undergo them by their parents or legal guardians, and who are at especially high risk of being harmed.
According to a report of the American Psychological Association, the techniques therapists have used to try to change sexual orientation and gender identity include inducing nausea, vomiting, or paralysis while showing the patient homoerotic images; providing electric shocks; having the individual snap an elastic band around the wrist when aroused by same-sex erotic images or thoughts; using shame to create aversion to same-sex attractions; orgasmic reconditioning; and satiation therapy.

In , the American Psychological Association conducted a comprehensive review of the published literature on these practices and concluded that they are not supported by any reliable evidence.
Family says disappearance is ‘absolutely devastating’ It’s been nearly two weeks since year-old Brooklynn Hays walked out of her house in Essex, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, and simply vanished.
We met downtown over coffee on a weekday morning a couple months ago. And I was struck that nobody in the passing parade of briefcases, lattes and workday stares appeared to notice the year-old as she adjusted her ponytail, wiped the tears and unloaded a story that she’s carried like a bag of bricks for years. She emailed me a few days earlier, up late one night, unable to sleep. In a chilling account, she detailed how she reported to police that she was sexually assaulted in by four men, three of them college football players.
She said she was gang raped, sodomized, robbed, and then, re-victimized — her word — when a college football coach suspended two of the players for one game and was quoted as saying his players had made, “a bad choice. All these years later, it sends her hurtling back to the rape examination at Salem Hospital, the police interview, having to tell her boyfriend and mother, and the whispers, guilt and shame.
For years, she’s been hung up on that three-word hook — “a bad choice” — as if violating her body was like knocking on the wrong door in the right neighborhood. She reported the gang rape to police in She’d told investigators the men stood around, watching it happen and cheering the others on. At one point, she said she begged one of the men to make it stop. The team was Oregon State.

But sadly, car crashes are the number one cause of death for young people. Many scientists argue that year-olds just aren’t mature enough to drive. Their brains aren’t yet fully developed and they’re more likely to take risks, become distracted, and make mistakes. As a way to help teens slowly gain driving responsibilities one step at a time, states adopted graduated license programs.
These programs have restrictions for newly licensed drivers, such as a limit on the number of passengers or a curfew. A study found that graduated license programs have been instrumental in reducing car crashes among 16 and year-olds. In fact, it’s been so successful that some states are considering adopting graduated license programs for 18 to year-olds who are becoming first-time drivers.
Each state in the United States establishes their own driving laws, including laws about the age at which teens can begin driving, and the rules vary greatly about graduated license requirements. Learner’s Permit Research shows many parents aren’t good at teaching kids to become safe drivers. Instead, they depend too much on driver’s education programs. Once your teen has a learner’s permit, don’t think of yourself as a passenger when your teen is behind the wheel.
Think of yourself as a teacher. Help your teen learn to recognize potential safety issues while driving.

Many law enforcement agencies across the country enlist the help of K9s when it comes to searching for a missing child or attempting to locate remains. And talk about success…Laila, the Golden Retriever has located 10 victims over the past 4 years! In early July, a 7-year-old child diagnosed with autism, went missing from home. Ace and his handler set out on the search for the missing child. After a few hours, Ace and his handler ran into a couple in the area who found a pair of sneakers in the area.
After tracking the child through the woods, Ace and his handler found the young child running over a small wooden bridge. After petting Ace for a short time, the child became more and more comfortable with the officers who were then able to lead the child out of the woods and into the arms of a desperately waiting mother. Thanks to Ace, his super sniffer, and a patient handler, another missing child was returned safely back home. In addition to using human volunteers while out on a search for a missing child, enlisting the help of a K9 brings more than just an extra pair of eyes.
Human beings leave behind scent with every step they take; live search canines can be used to track or air scent. The child left home after getting into an argument with family. After learning that the child was last seen walking toward a wooded area with no shoes on, Leo set out on the hunt. After just 15 minutes, Leo located the child who was found unharmed. The child was quickly returned home thanks to the quick work of Leo the canine…and of course his loyal handler!
